08 SepPodcatcher for N9 got some cool new features

A new version of Podcatcher for N9 is now available in Ovi Store! If you have previously downloaded or purchased (thank you!) Podcatcher, you should get an upgrade notification to your phone automatically.

There have been many good improvement ideas on how to make Podcatcher for N9 an even better podcast client. But there was one particular feature request above all: make auto-download configurable. So we did that. From the Settings menu of your N950 / N9 phone you can go to Podcatcher settings and select if you want to have the auto-download feature enabled or not. Still, if you enable it, it will only download automatically if you are connected to a WiFi network and I don’t think this will change any time soon.

But we also added some more cool settings!

You can now also select how many latest episodes should be downloaded automatically – or even all episodes. Another cool setting that we added is the feature of auto-cleanup. If you are like me, you don’t want to maintain the podcast library manually and you really care about the latest episodes. So what you now can do is to set the number of episodes that should be kept on the device and the rest are automatically cleaned from the library. You can also choose if you want Podcatcher to remove non-played episodes or keep them.

Of course, the default settings are the way you are used to from the previous version of Podcatcher.

I hope you enjoy Podcatcher even more! If you don’t already have it, please go get it from Ovi Store!

There is an older application called Podcatcher for Symbian at Ovi Store.  But as the publisher is different, I presume this app is different?

That is correct. That is why the official name of our app is Podcatcher for N9 but it is in no way related to the existing Podcatcher app on Symbian.

    N9 network speed issues?

I tried the Podcatcher Lite on N9, but for some reason the download speed of podcasts is extremely slow, like hours for 30 minutes podcast, over wifi.  Ovi Store client appears to occasionally suffer from the same, so perhaps it is some Qt issue?  Or is Science Friday podcast problematic somehow?
The web browser always seems to be fast.

Thanks for letting us know and good that it got resolved! So under the hood the downloading is using pure Qt so it should be ok on the device. We’ve never seen issue with this either so hopefully it works for you now.

Found out the problem.  There seems to be some glitch in N9 wifi power saving.  So when downloading over wifi, having the usb charger plugged in makes the problem go away.
