07 DecPodcatcher going to Symbian!

D-Pointer will introduce our first Symbian based app in the Nokia Store! The all familiar Podcatcher for N9 has been ported from MeeGo to Symbian and will be called Podmaster. It has the familiar nice looking UI, easy podcast discoverability and subscription thanks to gPodder.net and automated download feature present and will run on any Symbian Anna or later Symbian based smartphone. The application is currently in Q&A and we hope it will be available for purchase for a mere 1 euro very soon!

While waiting for that, please enjoy some screenshots of Podmaster running on the Nokia C7 and Symbian Anna :)

Update: Unfortunately Nokia has let us know that they are having problems processing new Symbian apps to the store. This issue is also affecting Podmaster, which was sent to Nokia Store Q&A just a few days prior to this issue.

For more information, please visit this Nokia’s page on the subject: http://support.publish.nokia.com/?p=3766

Update: While waiting for Podmaster to pass Nokia Store Q&A with the issue they have as noted above, we actually took this into our advantage and ported a very nice feature from the MeeGo version over to the Symbian version; podcast streaming from Podmaster! So you don’t need to download the episode first in order to listen to it but simple stream as you go. Podmaster will have a UI for this.

Update: Nokia has updated the page regarding processing of Qt apps for Symbian (http://support.publish.nokia.com/?p=3766). We are unsure what that means in the long run, but for now were are forced to target only Symbian Belle devices. We hope this issue will be resolved soon on Nokia’s behalf and we apologize for this from our part!

Nice spotted :) Only the best!

Hmm.. Will this get confusing with an existing and popular ‘PodCatcher’ app already in the Symbian store?

Granted, PodCatcher (the existing symbian one) is looking a bit dated these days, but I suppose competition is always a good thing :)

It will be called Podmaster in Symbian Nokia Store so there shouldn’t be any confusion after that between these two apps.

Also, this Podcatcher for N9 was called this before I learned that there is one with the same name for Symban. So there is nothing in common between these two apps in that regard either.

I hope you like it, when it hits the Store :)

Once the app is available – is there an easy way to transfer all my podcast subscriptions from my N9 (podcatcher app) to my Symbian devices running podmaster?

    • Anonymous

Unfortunately at the moment there isn’t. We just hope we’ve made adding of new subscriptions as easy as possible so it is not a too big of an inconvenience to subscribe to the podcasts again.

It would be really cool if you cold make a real gpodder.net integration, so that it not only syncs the shows but also the listeneing position and stats.

Syncing is one thing, but listening positions are not possible to utilize right now because we use the native media player to play the podcasts. It doesn’t allow to specify a start position. For this to work, we would need  to do the player interface ourselves. Which is not impossible of course…

Do you have an estimate as to when this will be available? I’m very eager to get hold of it!

    • Anonymous

We are too very eager to have it in the Nokia Store as soon as possible!

Unfortunately there seems to be some problem at Nokia’s end to process Symbian apps at the moment. We were informed about this recently: http://support.publish.nokia.com/?p=3766&type=alert

Basically it means that Nokia is unable to process Symbian apps at the moment that have been done with their latest SDK version. We are in constant contact with Nokia about this to have it resolved as soon as possible, but at the moment we cannot unfortunately do anything.

We will keep you posted about the situation.

OK, thanks for letting me know – fingers crossed it all gets sorted out soon. Looking forward to using the streaming function too :-)
