02 JanPodmaster has been resubmitted to Nokia Store

Podmaster was initially published in Nokia Store on the 26th of December for Symbian Belle devices. Unfortunately we got quite soon some feedback from a Symbian Belle user that there was an issue with Podmaster on Belle; after restarting the application, all subscriptions would be lost. We did not have access to Symbian Belle device during the porting and Podmaster was only tested on Symbian Anna on which is works just fine. When we heard about this issue, we immediately pulled Podmaster from Nokia Store so that we could investigate this issue and fix it.

We are happy to let you know that Podmaster has today, on the 2nd of January been resubmitted to Nokia Store for Q&A. This time we have been able to verify the functionality of Podmaster on Symbian Belle, specifically on Nokia 700 and Nokia 701 devices and we are happy to let you know that it works as expected. We hope it will be soon available on Nokia Store for Symbian Belle devices!

We must also add that unfortunately we have not heard from Nokia as of yet when Qt 4.7.4 based applications can be distributed to Symbian Anna devices. We must stress that Podmaster works on Symbian Anna, but due to deployment issues in Symbian Anna, Nokia does not yet allow distribution of Qt 4.7.4 based application for Symbian Anna from Nokia Store. You can read Nokia’s updates on this issue from this page: http://support.publish.nokia.com/?p=3766&type=news.

We will let you know as soon as possible when Podmaster is also available for Symbian Anna from the Nokia Store!

Update: Podmaster is now available again in the Nokia Store! http://store.ovi.com/content/229714. We hope it will stay there as well ;)

Just downloaded it, first thing i noticed is that there is no support for OPML import.

Needs some setting for feed behavior like keep last 2 shows, auto delete after x period and a list of downloaded shows would be helpful.

      Thanks for the feedback.

This is a port of the MeeGo version of the app. A rough port I might add, since we did not add any Symbian specific functionality to it. Also, the settings part is integrated in MeeGo framework and AFAIK there’s no application settings framework in Symbian so we would need to create a settings view inside the app.

Please consider this as the first version of the port. We might add Symbian specific things to it, like necessary settings.

Cant complain too much if the SDK is a pain. Also i will be getting an N9 next month, so hopefully i can leave all those restrictions behind.

Although it is worth mentioning that the other podcast app has much of the functionality mentioned. ;)

I understand that Podmaster is a first rough port of the N9 app to Symbian, but I am really looking forward to finally seeing a full-featured podcast player on Symbian. The best podcast managers on Android sell at about $8 (I now use DoggCatcher). I am sure that many Symbian users would be willing to pay an equivalent price for a good
podcast app. At least, I would.

I think that a good podcast manager should have at least the following functions, in order to allow easy listening and to avoid frustration:
    - Timed update/download of podcasts, using a download queue, and allowing selection of networks for downloading (WiFi/HSDPA).
    - Automatic downloading of the last N new episodes of each podcast or, alternatively, of the most recent N episodes, independently from whether or not they are new since the last update.
    - Automatic creation/updating of a playlist with episodes that have been downloaded and have not been completely listened to.
    - Sorting of the playlist by date or podcast title (optionally, podcasts could have user-defined categories, like news, sports, etc.).
    - Keeping track of the last playback position of each episode (a progress bar in the playlist, similar to the one used when downloading, could be used to indicate the last playback position).
    - Optionally, removing a podcast from this playlist when it has been completely listened to.
    - Automatically deleting podcasts that have been completely listened to, or offering the user to manually do so. Alternatively or additionally, an option to delete episodes after a specified amount of time.

Also, the following functions much enrich the playback experience:
    - The fwd/rew buttons in the player should be configurable to jump forward/back a specified amount of time (personally I use -10s/+30s): this is especially important for when the seek bar is not accessible, e.g. home screen widget / bluetooth headset with media buttons / remote control.
    - An option to stop at the end of each track or to automatically advance to the next track.
    - A sleep timer.

Any chance to see some of these functions in a next version of Podmaster?

PS: I also agree with dansus’ suggestions about OPML import/export and the issue of needing to redo searches after having subscribed to one podcast (although this is a minor issue, as it only affects the initial subscription to podcasts).
